Teenage Skin Care Consultations

Expert advice for healthy skin and lasting confidence

The teenage years bring significant changes to the skin. Hormonal fluctuations during puberty can increase oil production, leading to blackheads, breakouts and acne. For some teenagers, these concerns are mild and short-lived; for others, they can persist, affect confidence and leave lasting marks or scars.

With an overwhelming choice of skincare products and advice across social media, knowing how to care for teenage skin can be difficult.

At Mews Medical, we take a doctor-led, personalised approach to teenage skin health. Our aim is to help young people understand their skin, establish a simple and effective skincare routine, and access appropriate treatment when needed.

Healthy skin is not about having a complicated routine or achieving perfection. It is about understanding what your skin needs and looking after it properly.

Understanding teenage skin

During puberty, hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands, which produce the skin's natural oil, known as sebum. Increased sebum production, together with the build-up of dead skin cells, can block pores and contribute to acne.

Common teenage skin concerns include:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads: blocked pores that commonly appear across the forehead, nose and chin.

  • Acne and inflammatory breakouts: red spots, pustules and deeper, sometimes painful blemishes.

  • Oily or congested skin: increased shine and a tendency towards blocked pores.

  • Post-acne marks: red, brown or darker marks that can remain after spots have healed.

  • Acne scarring: changes in the skin's texture that may develop following more severe or persistent acne.

Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. Washing excessively, scrubbing the skin or using too many active ingredients can irritate the skin and make breakouts more difficult to manage.

Understanding the cause of a skin concern is the first step towards choosing the right treatment.

Building a simple teenage skincare routine

Teenage skincare does not need to be complicated or expensive. A consistent routine using appropriate products is usually a better starting point than layering multiple serums, exfoliants and treatments.

Teenage acne: when should you seek medical advice?

Acne is common, but teenagers do not have to simply accept persistent or distressing breakouts.

Medical assessment may be helpful if:

  • Acne is painful, inflamed or becoming more widespread.

  • Breakouts are leaving persistent marks or scars.

  • Over-the-counter products have not helped.

  • Skin concerns are affecting confidence, social activities or emotional wellbeing.

  • You are unsure which products or treatments are appropriate.

Effective acne treatments are available. Depending on the severity and type of acne, these may include topical treatments, prescription medication or referral to a dermatologist.

Early assessment is particularly important when acne is severe or there is a risk of permanent scarring.

Teenage skin and confidence

Skin concerns can have a significant impact on how young people feel about themselves. Acne may affect confidence, friendships, school life and willingness to participate in social activities.

It is important to recognise that the impact of acne is not determined by how severe it looks. Even relatively mild breakouts can cause considerable distress.

Our approach is supportive and non-judgemental. We aim to give teenagers the knowledge and practical advice they need, while helping parents understand how best to support them.

The goal is not perfect skin. It is healthier skin, appropriate treatment and greater confidence.

A personalised approach to teenage skin health

Every teenager's skin is different. The most appropriate skincare routine depends on factors such as skin type, the nature of the concern, existing products, sensitivity and previous treatments.

At Mews Medical, our doctor-led approach focuses on understanding these individual needs before recommending a practical plan.

A consultation may include:

  • Assessment of common skin concerns, including acne and congestion.

  • Advice on establishing a simple, appropriate skincare routine.

  • Guidance on selecting products and avoiding unnecessary or irritating ingredients.

  • Discussion of suitable evidence-based treatments where clinically appropriate.

  • Advice on when specialist dermatology assessment may be beneficial.

We believe good skincare should be proportionate, evidence-based and tailored to the individual, without unnecessary products or unrealistic expectations.

Supporting healthy skin from the start

The teenage years are an opportunity to develop healthy skincare habits that can continue into adulthood. With the right advice, young people can learn to care for their skin confidently and recognise when a concern needs professional attention.

Whether you are a teenager experiencing persistent breakouts or a parent looking for reliable advice, Mews Medical can help you understand the options available.
